There are many media formats available today; each with its own characteristics that shape it for a definite purpose. In addition, there has also been an upsurge of different devices, mainly portable ones, while the manufacturers don't seem to agree on one common format for them. As a result, converting between media formats has become a frequent task. Deciding which converter to use is difficult as there are so many different applications around.
ConvertGenius is a media converter specifically intended for video. It supports a wide range of both input and output formats. The whole procedure consists in two basic steps: selecting the files to convert and picking an output format. As it supports batch conversion, you can start by creating a conversion list. At this point, you will be able to preview and trim the video, which means that only the selected segment will be converted. However, you will not be able to extract two different segments from the same video file in a single session.
After this first step, you can proceed to configure conversion parameters. The developers have made this task easier for inexperienced users by allowing them to pick a target device, such as iPhone, iPad, iPod, PSP, Zune, Blackberry, PocketPC and Mobile 3GP. This action will guarantee compatibility between the target file format and the chosen gadget. On the other hand, advanced users may take advantage of this program’s extensive customization capabilities by setting different parameters, such as codec, size, frame rate, video bitrate, among others.
In my opinion, this program’s interface needs some redesign. Although I cannot say it is difficult to use, it has too many unnecessary elements, which may make the user feel disoriented. As a whole, ConvertGenius is an application that will go almost unnoticed among so many other converters.
